Pitch 1

We are developing a personalised furniture leasing service for people who are in transitional living situations needing to turn an empty house into a home for short- to mid-term situations.
We’ve heard from people living in a wide range of living situations, from flats, to singles, couples and families. 70% of people said they’d consider renting furniture over buying outright but almost none currently rent furniture, revealing a gap in the market.
People in transitional living situations - such as students and travellers would rather focus on study and play than finding, transporting and setting up furniture and having to get rid of it later. Our service takes the stress and hassle out of this process and helps improve peoples’ home quality, which is important as New Zealanders spend nearly 70% of their lives at home (Khajehzadeh & Vale).
Students are our main target audience, as we’ve identified that choosing, storing and transporting furniture is an issue for students between years of study. Tertiary students make up about 10% of NZ’s total population - around half a million (483,000) students in 2016 (Education Counts).
Students currently source furniture from opshops - where availability and style are not always guaranteed - or from low cost stores like The Warehouse and K-Mart where pieces look the part but won’t last long.
Price, style, function and convenience are the biggest points that people consider when seeking out furniture. We asked people what they’d do if one of their dining chairs broke. Interestingly, nearly 70% said they’d try to fix it - showing that people value longevity and quality. Our service provides people with durable and stylish furniture that will withstand being transported and leased between homes.
What are we asking? Warehouse, furniture, truck, website, universities, trademe, channels.
